Big sum for Antwerp: a quartet heading out?

Marc Overmars, after a suspension, extended his contract with Antwerp FC until 2027. Despite a restricted budget, he continues to sell key players to finance new transfers. Jean Butez and Michel-Ange Balikwisha could leave, while Zeno Van den Bosch and Mahamadou Doumbia are expected to bring in substantial sums.

Overmars’ return after suspension

In November last year, Marc Overmars was suspended by the Institute of Sports Law (ISR) for inappropriate behavior during his time at Ajax.
Antwerp, cautious, temporarily excluded him from transfers and contractual negotiations. Many then questioned his interest in continuing his role in the context of budgetary restrictions and falling sporting objectives. Against all odds, he chose to stay.

An extension to keep Antwerp at the top

In September, CEO Sven Jaecques announced the extension of Overmars’ contract until 2027. According to the Gazette of AntwerpOvermars is motivated to keep Antwerp FC among the best teams in Belgian football, despite a reduced budget.
“I never had the impression that he was considering leaving,” Jaecques explained. “If he gets an offer from clubs like Manchester City I can’t predict, but he is currently fully invested.”
