There is bickering within American football royalty.

On Tuesday, the attorney for former quarterback Brett Favre asked a federal appeals court to revive a defamation lawsuit his client filed against former tight end turned television analyst Shannon Sharpe.

The two Hall of Famers have been at loggerheads since Favre was accused of embezzling more than $1 million from Mississippi Human Services’ Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program.

In September 2022, Sharpe said on FOX Sports that Favre was “taking from the underprivileged,” that he was “stealing money from people who really needed it,” and that you have to be a bad person “to steal from people who are at their lowest.”

The former NFL quarterback tried to sue Sharpe for defamation, but his claim was denied last October. Favre, however, is not giving up.

Sharpe’s lawyer, for his part, said his client was “expressing his opinions rhetorically” and that there was no question of defamation. This is what the judge had indicated when he rejected Favre’s request in October.

In May 2022, Favre and several others were hit with a lawsuit for more than $20 million from Mississippi Human Services, which sought $3.2 million from Favre and Favre Enterprises Inc.

Months later, a Mississippi state auditor ruled that the former football player had improperly received $1.1 million from the aid program. He had used the money to help finance a volleyball arena at the University of Southern Mississippi, where he attended and where his daughter played volleyball.

Favre has repaid the $1.1 million, but still owes more than $700,000 in interest. The 54-year-old has consistently denied wrongdoing and has not been criminally charged in the matter.
