Less than two weeks after suffering a broken femur during a game against Utah, the Washington Capitals captain is already back on skates.
The 39-year-old forward jumped on the ice in a tracksuit before his team’s practice Monday morning. He made a few strides and did not seem bothered by the injury which was expected to keep him sidelined for four to six weeks.
At the time of his injury, “Ovi” led the entire National Hockey League (NHL) with 15 goals in 18 games. He thus came just 26 times closer to Wayne Gretzky’s record for the most goals in a single career.
During his 20-season career, the Russian had only missed 35 games due to injuries before this one.
The first overall pick in the 2004 draft has an agreement valid until the end of the 2025-2026 season with the team from the American capital.
