There were several of us who wanted the same thing a few weeks ago.
And many shared the same thought:
What is Martin St-Louis waiting for to put Lane Hutson on the first wave of the power play?
Matheson’s injury “forced” St-Louis to make changes.
In the last few matches, we saw Hutson have his chance… And so far, the result is interesting.
When we look at the Canadian’s advanced power play statistics with Hutson and with Matheson, we realize that it is completely different.
Arpon Basu (The Athletic) talked about it in a recent text:
Basically, with Hutson in place of Matheson, the Canadian is better in each of these following categories:
- Shootout attempts
- Penalties
- Dangerous Odds
- Expected goals
- Buts
- Shooting percentage
All these statistics (besides the dangerous chances) are calculated per 60 minute period.
That said, the numbers are obvious… And it shows just how talented Lane Hutson is.
The text in question (which I recommend you read) can be found right here:
Martin St-Louis had no choice but to trust Matheson to start the season.
#8, after all, occupied the quarterback chair on the power play last season and he put up points in
He has more experience, too.
But there, we saw enough to say that Lane Hutson deserves – from now on – to be part of the first wave of the powerplay.
He creates things with his vision and ultimately, he is more responsible than Matheson in the offensive zone. The only aspect to correct: Hutson needs to shoot more often at the net and everyone has noticed it in the last few games.
But otherwise, Lane Hutson is doing great things with the man advantage… And that’s just the beginning.
That’s what’s interesting about all this.
