Mertens chose to leave Deinze: “We were lied to”

Deinze is still in trouble and, with Lennart Mertens, has already seen a player leave. The striker opted for a move to SK Beveren, leaving Deinze behind. The player evokes an untenable situation within the club.

Due to the financial problems, the group of players have not been paid for a long time and therefore the players have the right to sign with another club. At first, Mertens didn’t want to leave, but he saw no other solution.

False promises

“I am a man of honor, but we have constantly been made false promises and lied to our faces,” he said in Het Nieuwsblad. “I would have been the last to leave the ship, but when things like this happen, I’m done,” the striker said.

The players were not receiving their salaries, which caused them to no longer want to play for the club. According to Mertens, the atmosphere remained good, but it was not easy.

We are not Kevin De Bruyne

“It wasn’t easy. I have seen scenes that we would rather not see. Some have wives who don’t work or have children. We’re not Kevin De Bruyne who earns that much per week, but it’s still our job. With hopes and promises, I don’t pay my bills,” he concludes.
