Big move: “Surprising deal for Virgil van Dijk”

What’s next for Virgil van Dijk? The Dutch central defender, a pillar of Liverpool for years, sees his contract expire at the end of this season. In the past, a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia had already been mentioned.

At 33, Van Dijk continues to attract the interest of many clubs with tempting offers. However, against all expectations, he chose to extend his contract with Liverpool, according to the English media.

A centerpiece

Arriving in 2018 from Southampton for around €85 million, Van Dijk has enjoyed immense success at Anfield. Six years later, he remains an indisputable holder. This season, he has already played 17 matches, scoring two goals and providing an assist.

Captain of the Reds, the Dutchman was a top priority for Liverpool, who wanted to keep him at all costs. The negotiations reportedly went surprisingly smoothly, with moderate demands from the player. A contrast with other stars of the club.

Potential departures on the horizon

Liverpool, however, risk losing other key elements. Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold are reportedly leaving, due to disagreements over their extensions. Salah could be tempted by an adventure in the Middle East, while Real Madrid are keeping a close eye on Alexander-Arnold.

In this context, Van Dijk’s extension represents good news for Liverpool, who retain one of their leaders on and off the field.
