Formula 1 | Mercedes F1 is going in the right direction but the gap is big with McLaren

Lewis Hamilton is confident that Mercedes F1 will “in the right direction” despite being six tenths behind McLaren during free practice this Friday at the British Grand Prix.

Lando Norris topped both sessions and McLaren looks to be the team to beat this weekend.

For Mercedes, the pace in the first free practice session was particularly impressive as the team opted not to run on the soft tyres.

In the second free practice session, Hamilton was only sixth, while his team-mate George Russell was tenth. More worryingly, the gap to Norris was just over 0.6 seconds.

Looking back on his day at Silverstone, Hamilton was pleased with the way his Mercedes handled.

“I felt good, I felt in the W15 overall. But not as quick as the guys in front, like the McLarens.”

As for the upgrades Mercedes have made for this weekend, a revised front wing and rear wing, which are considered “circuit specific”, Hamilton played down their significance.

“They are like small adjustments but we are on the right track despite a big gap to McLaren. We don’t really have any evolutions. They are some small adjustments, but not necessarily improvements.”

“Every time we add something, we’re going in the right direction, but the others are making improvements at the same time. I mean we were six and a half tenths off on that. I don’t know if it’s really exactly six tenths. We’ve got some work to do.”

Across the Mercedes garage, Russell believes the team is in a similar position to the last few rounds.

“This morning was really good to be honest. The car was handling well. We struggled a bit more this afternoon, you have to understand why. It was a bit more windy. We didn’t really manage to get the tyres under control. The competitiveness is quite similar to what we’ve seen in the last few races.”

“The first free practice session was really solid. We need to understand why we lost a bit of pace in FP2. I’m sure everything will change tomorrow with the conditions, it’s raining now. I’m just happy to be here and looking forward to racing.”
