Agreement with Atal, OM faces controversy

Free after his brief stint in Turkey, Youcef Atal is heading to Olympique de Marseille. The Algerian right-back has reached an agreement with the Marseille club, which still needs to sort out some details before registering his signature. A sensitive issue due to the conviction of the former Nice player last January.

Olympique de Marseille is moving forward with its recruitment. After the official arrivals of Ismaël Koné and Lilian Brassier, the Vélodrome resident could soon welcome Youcef Atal to compensate for the possible departure of Jonathan Clauss. L’Equipe mentioned a non-priority track for the Olympique management, initially keen to push players out and strengthen other positions. But this Friday, the media outlet Foot Mercato claims that the Marseille club has reached a total agreement with the 28-year-old right-back.

The Algerian, free after his brief stint at Adana Demirspor, would be willing to commit for one year, plus an additional year as an option. However, his signing is not guaranteed for Olympique de Marseille, which still has to sort out certain details. In the meantime, other interested teams such as Besiktas, Galatasaray, Istanbul Basaksehir and AEK Athens continue to push to recruit him. At the helm of this file, president Pablo Longoria and his right-hand man Medhi Benatia are therefore not immune to a turnaround in the situation. And even less so to a controversy.

Some voices are indeed beginning to recall Youcef Atal’s past. Last January, the former OGC Nice player was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended, for incitement to racial hatred. The Algerian international had relayed a video of a preacher calling for ” a black day for the Jews “His slip-up had precipitated the end of his adventure at the Gym, where the right-back never really took advantage of his potential due to repeated injuries.
