Montreal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes is very willing to socialize with his counterparts.
At least that’s what renowned informant Darren Dreger suggested during a recent appearance on Montreal radio TSN 690.
According to Dreger, Hughes is currently considering any offer made for the services of one of his future unrestricted free agents.
Among the Canadians, Christian Dvorak, Joel Armia, Jake Evans, Michael Pezzetta and David Savard will be able to achieve full autonomy on July 1.
“Kent Hughes listens to just about anything that’s offered to him that could help the Canadiens,” Dreger said, “but as you know, it’s focused on the future of the team. For all the players mentioned, the thought is: “Do they fit in long term?” And then you consider what you can get for each of those players.”
Of all the aforementioned players, Evans is perhaps the most likely to stay in Montreal.
“That’s the impression I have,” said Dreger, who expressed an opinion. He is an energetic player who is having a good start to the season.”
Mike Matheson is under contract until 2026. He remains a card up the CH GM’s sleeve, according to Dreger’s words.
“There will always be teams that need quality defenders,” recalled the experienced journalist. When he’s healthy, this will be a card Hughes can play. Savard too, obviously.”
In the short term, Matheson would represent an immense loss for the Habs; he is the most used player on the team with an average playing time of 24 minutes and five seconds.
