Recently, Domenico Tedesco was asked about the possibility of selecting Zakaria El Ouahdi, in form with KRC Genk. Killian Sardella was then preferred, but the Belgian-Moroccan does not close the door.
Could Zakaria El Ouahdi (22 years old) change selection again? The KRC Genk full-back has already worn the colors of the Moroccan Espoirs 14 times, and was also an Olympic international for the Atlas Lions.
El Ouahdi has even already been selected with the Morocco A team last September; he remained on the bench during both matches… and could therefore still be taken over by Belgium. He recently assured that he “was Moroccan and remained Moroccan”, but interviewed by Eleven Sportshe blurred his tracks.
Domenico Edesco did not call him up during the last international break, but his name was mentioned, as he of course learned. “It’s nice to be talked about. I have both nationalists, it’s just up to me to decide. I played in a U23 CAN, I participated in the Olympic Games with Morocco”, recalls El Ouahdi .
The Genkois indeed won the U23 CAN with Morocco. Suffice to say that for many, his choice in favor of his country of origin is obvious. “It wouldn’t be easy to opt for Belgium… but of course, hearing that I could be called up is very nice,” he concedes.
“If I am called up… it will be a dilemma. But for the moment I am not thinking about it, the next selection is only in March. I am focusing on Genk. But the door is clearly not not closed.” We will appreciate these declarations in Morocco…
