World No.2 Iga Swiatek was sanctioned with a one-month suspension after testing positive for a banned substance in mid-August, the International Integrity Agency (ITIA) said on Thursday.

“The ITIA confirms that Polish tennis player Iga Swiatek has accepted a one-month suspension (…), after testing positive for a banned substance, trimetazidine, in a sample taken out of competition in August 2024,” announced the body in a press release.

The ITIA accepted the thesis of “contamination of a medicine”, judging that “the degree of fault of the player” was “the lowest of the spectrum”.

This announcement echoes the Jannik Sinner affair. After a double positive test in March, the world No.1 was initially cleared by the ITIA. However, he is now under threat of suspension since the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) appealed the decision not to sanction him.

Concerning Swiatek, traces of trimetazidine were found in melatonin produced and sold in Poland, which she took for sleep problems and jet lag, explains the ITIA.

Considering “the violation” of anti-doping regulations “unintentional”, the anti-doping body proposed a one-month suspension to the former world No.1 on November 27, a sanction accepted by the 23-year-old player.

However, her suspension is already largely served, since it was provisionally suspended between September 12 and October 4 at the start of the procedure.

During these three weeks, she was unable to participate in three tournaments on the Asian tour, including two WTA 1000s in China, in Beijing and Wuhan.

He therefore has eight days of suspension left to serve, until December 4.
