Nunzio Engwanda made his debut for Anderlecht. He didn’t have much opportunity to show himself, but was “decisive”.
Nunzio Engwanda (16 years old until Sunday again!) made his big debut for RSC Anderlecht in a very hot context. The young central defender extended his contract last July, and participated in preparation under Brian Riemer.
Since then, he has not had the opportunity to play anywhere other than in the Challenger Pro League. But following Sardella’s injury, Hubert included him in the group and even brought him into the game 6 minutes from time, somewhat to everyone’s surprise.
Nunzio Engwanda had to fight a few duels with the lively wingers of FC Porto, in a heated context as the match was going in all directions. It’s difficult to judge his performance but he probably grew more in about ten minutes than in 11 D1B matches.
Jan-Carlo Simic, also very young, welcomed the entry of Engwanda. “He made his big debut and saved us at the end by clearing a hot ball. The young people are working hard here and I’m proud of it,” declared the Serb.
Nunzio Engwanda indeed cleared a dangerous ball after a ball pushed back by Colin Coosemans. After the match, Hubert insisted that the young people were not receiving “gifts” but were aligned because he believed in them and needed their profile; there is no doubt that his confidence in Engwanda has not diminished.
