The Canadian men’s Soccer team will end the year on a high, having moved up four ranks to 31st in the world.
The representatives of the maple leaf had never climbed higher than 33rd place in the FIFA world rankings, a feat which was accomplished in February 2022 under the aegis of head coach John Herdman. The Canadians then went undefeated during the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying process, and earned the title of FIFA’s “Most Improved” team in 2021.
Canada reached rock bottom by reaching 122nd position in the FIFA world rankings in October 2014.
The Canadians entered 2024 ranked 48th in the world, and slipped to 50th in February, before settling at 49th when Jesse Marsch took over the team in mid-May. Since that time, the Canadian team has never stopped progressing in the rankings, going from 48th, to 40th, to 38th and 35th, before peaking at 31st place.
The national side are now settled between Hungary and Serbia in the world rankings, and their successive 3-0 and 1-0 victories over Suriname in the CONCACAF Nations League quarter-finals earlier this month have consolidated its hold on the 31st place in the world.
The world top-5 remained identical to the previous ranking. Argentina still sits at the top, ahead of France, Spain, England and Brazil.
Portugal and the Netherlands each moved up one place to sixth and seventh, while Belgium are now eighth. Italy remained ninth, and the top-10 was completed by Germany.
