The Alouettes’ new contract with Davis Alexander says a lot about the organization’s level of confidence in this player, but to me, the situation comes with another obvious conclusion: the promising quarterback wanted to stay in Montreal.

The three-year agreement, through which Alexander could receive a little over a million dollars in total, seems fair and interesting to me. However, I remain convinced that the 26-year-old athlete would never have joined another team, simply to get a little more money. I’m not saying that Alexander signed a cheap contract in Montreal, but he knows very well that the winning conditions are there and that the relationship with the Alouettes could expand and become even more profitable in the long term.
Alexander knows the synergy that is already in place in Montreal, he loves his teammates, his coaches and the entire organization. It’s much better than having to leave, create new links and try to restructure another team’s offense.
For the Alouettes, we must remember that Alexander has been here for several years. He will have been an investment for future years since the day he was identified at Portland State University, an establishment he attended until 2021. The Alouettes have not only seen this hard-working, persevering and with a positive attitude, but they grew it themselves. All that remained was to conclude this special contract, for an equally special player.
An endearing personality
We’re talking about excellent news for the Alouettes, but also for the team’s fans. Personally, this prolonged relationship between Alexander and the Montreal club really makes me dream. I believe he could soon become the most popular quarterback in Montreal since the days when Anthony Calvillo was the center of the offense. Smiling, Alexander has a very endearing personality.
His current contract is therefore valid for three seasons, but I am already anticipating a possible agreement that will link him to the Alouettes for 2028, 2029 and beyond. I also imagine important Football games played, with Alexander at quarterback, in front of tens of thousands of fans gathered in a renovated Olympic Stadium.
Poor Cody!
If the future looks bright for dreamers, the future of veteran quarterback Cody Fajardo is much more worrying. I don’t want to assume anything, but in the event that the Alouettes do indeed ask Fajardo to restructure his contract, we are talking about a scenario that rarely works out. Since it’s never black or white, we can think that general manager Danny Maciocia will want to leave the veteran in an interesting situation and that he could very well trade him while finding his account for the Alouettes, possibly in return for ‘a draft pick.
To summarize, Fajardo’s future currently depends a lot on other teams in the Canadian Football League and their needs.
