Wimbledon | French 2nd round: Gaël Monfils finishes the job against Stan Wawrinka in three sets

Monfils wasted no time

He could have gotten frustrated, but he handled the situation very well, probably thanks to his experience. Cut short on Wednesday by the night when he was about to conclude his duel against his old rival Stan Wawrinka, Gaël Monfils only had to play three games on Thursday: two par games and a tie-break. He thus won in the second round of Wimbledon on court number 2 in three sets (7-6, 6-4, 7-6) and 2h03 of cumulative playing time over two days against the Swiss. In the third round, he will face Grigor Dimitrov who came back from hell against Juncheng Shang (5-7, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4).

They had parted as good friends, practically arm in arm on Wednesday, and they gave each other another big hug after concluding their battle. But overall there was no contest between a Gaël Monfils who had gained confidence from his semi-final in Mallorca on grass last week and a Stan Wawrinka who was sometimes awkward in his movements. The tie-break in the third act showed this very well, with the Frenchman using the drop shot several times, including one last time to conclude. He will try to reach the second week at the All England Club on Friday for only the second time in his career.
