Sergio Marchi, current general secretary of the Argentine players’ union FAA and president of FIFPRO South America, was elected president of FIFPRO after winning a majority vote in the council. The former defender, who played for clubs such as San Lorenzo, Almirante Brown and Union de Santa Fe, becomes FIFPRO’s first non-European president.
Marchi, President of FIFPRO, said: “It is a great honor but also an enormous responsibility to be elected President of FIFPRO. This is undoubtedly a great challenge that I take on with immense commitment.
“Today, we are entering a new phase, which brings with it many challenges in a sector that is evolving at high speed. But we know how to meet them. One thing is clear: there is no football without players. From FIFPRO, we will continue to work to improve their conditions with conviction and hope.”
Meanwhile, Alexander Phillips has been appointed FIFPRO General Secretary, a position he will hold from 1 March 2025. Mr Phillips said: “I am honored to be appointed FIFPRO General Secretary and am grateful of the trust placed in me. I look forward to working with our members and stakeholders to build FIFPRO’s legacy, defend footballers’ rights and deliver collective solutions for a fair and inclusive future in football.”
