He’s a good guy who beat my record on the Tourwrote the 79-year-old Fleming, whose legendary status will obviously not be tarnished by the fact that he now appears behind Mark Cavendish in the number of stage victories.

Mark Cavendish’s reaction to his 36th Tour de France victory

“I can’t believe it. Astana took a gamble by taking me to the Tour de France this year. We came here with the goal of winning a stage. It was a big bet from my boss (Alexandre Vinokourov). We went looking for other riders who know the Tour and we went all in. Today (Wednesday), we did exactly what we wanted to do. We did it as a team, the guys improvised, the train worked and I was able to win. I thank the whole team, my equipment supplier, everyone.”

“The Tour de France is more important than anything, I love this race. It was very hard (after his fall last year, editor’s note) but I wanted to come back. I knew how to come back, the people around me too, it’s my job to be a runner. My mental? It’s definitely an advantage, physical fitness isn’t everything. We’ll try to do it again tomorrow (Thursday).”
