After losing his position as an assistant with the Toronto Maple Leafs during the summer, Guy Boucher will make a return behind a team’s bench in the coming days.
However, it will not be within a National Hockey League (NHL) team. The Quebec coach instead agreed to lead Omsk Avangard in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) after concluding a two-season pact with the club.
This is a return to Europe for the man from Notre-Dame-du-Lac, who was at the helm of the SC Bern club in the Swiss National League (NL) for three seasons from 2013 to 2016.
Boucher went into exile on the Old Continent after losing his position as head coach with the Tampa Bay Lightning during the 2012-2013 season.
Later in his career, the 53-year-old managed the Ottawa Senators for three years before being fired during the 2018-19 season. After a long break, he agreed to join Sheldon Keefe’s coaching staff in Toronto, but Keefe was fired at the end of another disappointing season.
New Leafs coach Craig Berube has decided not to retain the services of the Quebecer.
