Best player and scorer of the last season of D1 Arkéma with PSG, Tabitha Chawinga has signed for three seasons with the “Fenottes”.

New spoils for OL Féminin. Best player and scorer of the last season of D1 Arkéma, Tabitha Chawinga has signed a three-year contract with Olympique Lyonnais Féminin. Loaned to PSG by the Chinese club Wuhan Jianghan University, she joins the most successful team in the history of the French women’s championship until June 30, 2027, the club specifies in a press release.

For her first season in France, the Malawian striker scored 19 goals in 21 D1 women’s matches and was named best player of the 2023-24 season at the UNFP Trophies. With PSG, the 28-year-old striker also distinguished herself in the Champions League, where she scored 6 goals in 12 matches, and in the Coupe de France (4 goals in 5 matches). “Known for her speed and technical qualities, Tabitha Chawinga is the first Malawian player to play in Europe”recalls the Rhone club.

Before France, she played in Sweden, China and Italy and for the Malawi national team, a small country in southern Africa with little presence on the football scene. “It was a goal for me to sign for a big club and I am happy to be able to continue my career at OL”says the player, quoted in the press release. “I hope to inspire other people in Malawi to follow in my footsteps”she continues, explaining that she wants “to show new generations that it is possible to believe in their dreams and make them come true”.

In an interview with AFP in April, she said she started playing football at the age of 5 with the boys in her village, despite her parents’ opposition. “They thought it was a sport for men and wanted me to stay focused on school.”she said. When she returns, she will play alongside Christiane Endler, Selma Bacha, Lindsey Horan and Kadidiatou Diani.
