Star singer Ed Sheeran, a big Ipswich fan, helped the club promoted to the Premier League this season to recruit a player this summer, its chairman revealed on Thursday. The 33-year-old English pop star is a long-time supporter of Ipswich Town, currently 17th in the English championship, where he has sponsored the jerseys of the men’s and women’s teams since 2021.
Suffolk club chairman Mark Ashton revealed on Thursday that Sheeran, “a local native, global superstar, sponsor, shareholder and now an official member of our recruitment unit”, had been instrumental in recruiting a player by making a video call.
“Last summer we tried to persuade a player to join the club and quickly realized he was a fan of Ed Sheeran. Ed gave him a Zoom call just before he went on stage with Taylor Swift” during a concert on August 15 at Wembley, the manager said during a public event.
He did not reveal the name of the player recruited, specifying however that he had scored “a few goals”. Ipswich recruited Blackburn striker Sammie Szmodics during the off-season, who has already scored three times, and Manchester City striker Liam Delap, scorer of six goals.
Ipswich hosts Manchester United on Sunday for the 12th day. The Red Devils will travel with their new coach, Portuguese Ruben Amorim, on the bench for the first time.
