Cameroon: a barometer to fight against unpaid debts
Players’ union Synafoc has created a new means of raising awareness about non-payment issues in Cameroon. Many footballers find themselves in a precarious situation due to non-payment of salaries and bonuses and the inaction of the football federation, which often does not implement the decisions of judicial bodies.
The union’s project is called “Barometer”. Every month, the union sends a survey to players from all teams in the top two men’s divisions and the top women’s division, which reports on their salary situation. The union then releases the results of this survey to players at a monthly press conference.
This project had three short-term objectives:
- Inform stakeholders and the public of poor working conditions for players.
- Explain the measures that Synafoc intends to implement to restore players’ rights.
- Inform players of the means at their disposal in the event of non-payment.
Of course, Synafoc’s long-term goal is that footballers’ salaries and bonuses are paid on time. According to Geremie Njitap, president of Synafoc, the Barometer exceeded the set objectives.
“It is now an expected and appreciated event,” he said. “The club presidents who have snubbed us in the past are now calling us to justify themselves and avoid appearing in the Barometer.
“Players now know which clubs are serious and which are not, so the Barometer is a real decision-making tool for them. And the football federation is a little more interested in applying its own rules to force clubs to respect their commitments.
