On a dazzling start and on track to break Wayne Gretzky’s record this season, Alexander Ovechkin suffered an injury that seemed serious at the worst time, Monday night, against the Utah team.
Ovechkin, who scored his 14th and 15th goals of the season in this game, was the victim of hard knee-to-knee contact with Jack McBain at center ice. Watch in the video above.
Number 8, who missed very few matches during his career (Russian machines don’t break, he liked to imagine), remained on his knees for long periods of time.
He left the ice surface limping and with the help of his teammate Jakob Chychrun. He did not return to the match.
Ovechkin is only 27 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s record, once thought to be untouchable. Since the start of his career, he had never piled up 15 goals so quickly to start a season.
The “Tsar”, with five goals in his last two games, sits first in the NHL ahead of Sam Reinhart and Leon Draisaitl.
On X, Internet users were furious to see this momentum possibly slowed down and had a grudge against McBain.
“He is being evaluated by our doctors and we will know more tomorrow [mardi]“, indicated Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery after the game, as cited by the National Hockey League website.
“It’s really a shame,” admitted Capitals forward Nic Dowd. We hate to see that. He was on fire and incredible for our team. He’s our captain and he played big hockey.”
