As the stoppage of play came to an end in Tenerife, the Swiss football team thought they had a more than honorable result to conclude their year: a draw against the Spanish European champions. But a more clumsy than nasty foul from Vincent Sierro in the penalty area allowed Bryan Zaragoza to convert a penalty and change the game. Final score: 3-2.
This last part of the year, contested in the semi-friendly framework of the League of Nations, was completely devoid of any issues. Spain was already assured of finishing at the top of the group, and Switzerland condemned to relegation to the second division after the draw conceded on Friday in Zurich against Serbia. For Murat Yakin’s men, it was simply a matter of trying to end a very dismal autumn with a positive result. Alas, they ultimately posted a record of two draws for four defeats since a Euro in Germany during which it nevertheless seemed to have started a positive dynamic.
