Gigi Dall’Igna is a key part at Ducati. ” It’s always a pleasure “.

You arrived in MotoGP with the objective of winning the title. And you did it twice with an Italian driver. What is the next challenge?
“The challenge is to continue where we are, because it’s one thing to win and it’s another to keep winning. Continue to be the protagonists of the most difficult motorcycle championships, namely MotoGP and WorldSBK. Not for two years, but for five or six years.”

In the future, would it be possible to see Gigi Dall’Igna in another factory?
” No, I do not think so. Honestly, I worked very hard to get here and to achieve the results we achieved together. And now it would be nice to do something less difficult. Now is not the time to be the last to arrive somewhere.”

But have there been contacts with other factories in the past?
“Yes, I would be lying if I said no. There were several contacts, but in the end I always thought that Ducati was the best factory I have worked for.”

Speaking of the Japanese, why do you think they are in the situation they are in?
“Let’s just say they probably underestimated their opponents. And it’s still a problem. If someone wants to beat an opponent, he should not underestimate him. And having a very strong driver probably leads you to underestimate your rivals, because you think he can solve problems for you. However, even if you have a champion, you have to keep working because you have to give your rider the best bike possible, listening to all your riders. [Les Japonais] have won and dominated for so many years that it’s hard to think you have limits when you win so much.”

Is there any truth in the statement that aerodynamics are very important because regulations limit development in other areas?
“It’s because of the stability of the regulations. The MotoGP regulations have been stable since 2011, which is a long period. Aerodynamics is one of the few things, along with the holeshot, that only recently started to be developed, so there was more room to look for solutions.”

Regarding the new regulations, a quick question: why 850cc?
“Let’s say it was important to reduce the performance and speed of the motorcycles. Indeed, if we continue at this pace, the speed will increase so much that the circuits will no longer be safe. So it was right to take a step back towards 850 cc. This is a compromise figure which was obtained by averaging all the figures proposed by the manufacturers.”

Finally, let’s talk about the drivers. What criteria do you use to choose them?
“I think it is important to have two drivers who can win the world championship. It’s about understanding who could be tomorrow, in 2025, the best driver to win the title. We already have it, but as Max Biaggi said,
“Motorcycling is not a classical music concert”. A lot of things can happen, especially with the current regulations, with the Sprint and everything else. It is therefore important to have two drivers capable of winning the championship within the team. Look what happened with Bastianini last year.”

Is Marc Marquez doing things on the Ducati that no other rider has done?
Let’s just say that normally, especially on left turns, it’s terrible. Sometimes he is better at braking, but sometimes Pecco [Bagnaia] is better. They are on the same level, in my opinion.”
