Friday, the Imps will face the Czech Republic. Matteo Dams could make his U21 debut for the occasion.
Matteo Dams impresses this season with PSV Eindhoven. He established himself in the Netherlands as an indisputable starter for the reigning champion.
Behind Johan Bakayoko, he works wonders. But unlike the striker, Dams was not called up by Domenico Tedesco, but rather by Gill Swerts in the U21.
However, this is his first call-up with the Diablotins, and he will begin with a crucial double clash against the Czech Republic. Dams hopes to at least make his debut. He already has experience in big games, as he has started all 4 of PSV’s Champions League games this season.
“I wasn’t really impressed by my opponents in the Champions League, but by the aspects around it: the anthem, the stadium, entering the pitch, etc.,” he told Nieuwsblad. The Belgian full-back does not lack self-confidence.
“The match itself looked like any other match and Achraf Hakimi or Ousmane Dembélé ultimately only have two legs,” smiles Matteo Dams. “But of course, when you play in the Champions League, you give it your all because you’ve dreamed of it all your life.”
