Eller played for the Capitals for seven seasons and helped them win their first Stanley Cup in 2018.

The 35-year-old Eller scored four goals and totaled seven points in 17 games with the Penguins this season. The last campaign planned for a two-year contract signed in the summer of 2023 is coming to an end.

Eller scored 182 goals and amassed 409 points in 1,053 games with the St. Louis Blues, Montreal Canadiens, Capitals, Colorado Avalanche and Penguins. Effective in both directions of the ice and numerically inferior, he joined the Capitals, authors of an excellent start to the season.

The Capitals are 10-4-0, third in the Metropolitan Division, behind the Carolina Hurricanes and the New Jersey Devils.

It could be the first of many trades this season for the Penguins, who were two points out of last place in the Eastern Conference heading into Tuesday’s National Hockey League (NHL) games.
