The second round of matches in the Euro 2024 group stage begins this Wednesday, June 19. Germany, host of this competition, will seek to advance to the round of 16 against Hungary, while Croatia will have no room for error against Albania.

The first match is between two teams who lost their first match in Group B. Croatia is looking to recover from a heavy defeat against Spain against an Albanian team who led early against Italy but lost.

The rest of the day is devoted to Group A: Germany faces Hungary in the second match before Scotland and Switzerland cross swords in the final match of the day.

Croatia/Albania: 2 p.m.

Croatia and Albania will open the ball for this day, with a match to kick things off at the Volsparkstation in Hamburg.

These two Balkan nations did not earn points in their first match. Croatia had more possession than Spain, but failed to win and will therefore have to redouble their efforts in this meeting.

Meanwhile, Albania had a moment of euphoria against Italy, scoring the fastest opening goal in tournament history (23 seconds). However, Italy quickly took control of the match after falling behind. Albania’s opening goal was the team’s only shot on target for the match, and Italy had over 68% possession.

Albania will once again be huge underdogs in this match, which will be the first meeting between these two neighboring countries.

Germany/Hungary: 5 p.m.

Germany won their first match against Scotland with a 5-1 victory and can clinch a place in the round of 16 with a victory against Hungary in this second match which will take place at the Stuttgart-Arena.

After scoring five goals in this first victory, the Germans should feel confident.

That said, Hungary won the last time these teams met. Hungary won 1-0 at Leipzig in the UEFA Nations League in September 2022. The teams also drew 1-1 in Budapest in June of the same year.

Hungary followed up their respectable Nations League performance in 2022 (which included two wins over England) with an undefeated 2023 consisting mainly of Euro qualifying.

After two years of good results, the 3-1 defeat against Switzerland on Sunday was probably a shock for the nation, making the path to the round of 16 difficult.

Scotland/Switzerland: 8 p.m.

Switzerland now faces Scotland, at the Cologne stadium, a team which conceded 5 goals from Germany in its first match.

Switzerland is in an excellent position to advance and can clinch a place in the round of 16 with a victory. The Swiss have reached the round of 16 of the last five major tournaments (three Euros and two World Cups).

Meanwhile, Scotland have never made it out of the group stage of a major tournament. It’s a record that includes eight World Cups and three previous European Championships.

After this 5-1 defeat against Germany, Scotland need a miracle to qualify for the knockout stage and end this drought.
