The ranking of Quebecers for the NHL draft according to Craig Button

Thursday morning, RDS.ca will present its “mock draft” with a view to the 1st round of the next NHL draft.

The rise of Tij Iginla, star player for the Kelowna Rockets in the Western Junior League (WHL), this season has been remarkable in the eyes of Craig Button, director of scouting for the TSN network.

In the September edition of his ranking of the best prospects for the next NHL draft, Button did not place Iginla among the first 32. In December, Button ranked the striker 22nd.

In May, he moved up to fourth in the top five and now sits third in Button’s final rankings, behind Boston University’s Macklin Celebrini and St. Petersburg SKA’s Ivan Demidov.

Iginla had 47 goals and 84 points in 64 games with the Rockets this season, and added nine goals and 15 points in 11 playoff games.
The 17-year-old then finished the campaign by helping Canada win gold at the World Under-18s, where he had 6 goals and 12 points in seven games.

Another forward making a final jump up the list is US Development Program winger Cole Eiserman, who moves up from 9th place in May to 5th.

Eiserman had a breakout year, scoring 58 goals in 57 games this season, and broke Cole Caufield’s U.S. program goals record with 127. At the under-18 level, he scored nine goals in seven games , helping the Americans win the silver medal.

Boisvert, the best Quebecer ahead of Poirier

As for Quebec players, forward Sacha Boisvert, who played this season in the USHL in Muskegon, is the best according to Button, who ranks him 25th.

The center player is ahead of the Baie-Comeau Drakkar forward, whom Button lists in 38th place, the top for players playing in the QMJHL.

Maxim Massé, from the Chicoutimi Saguenéens, follows in 46th place ahead of Raoul Boilard (Drakkar) 84th and Tomas Lavoie (Cape Breton Eagles) 86th.

Spencer Gill (Océanic de Rimouski), who is originally from New Brunswick, slips to 51st place in Button’s ranking.
