underwater, with Halle Berry and Megan Rapinoe, sledding or moving in Nice…

The Paris 2024 Olympic flame experienced its 34th stage in the Alpes-Maritimes this Tuesday, June 18. Coming out of the Mediterranean Sea, she walked the red carpet in Cannes, went sledding and zip-lining in montage… A very rhythmic day of which here are the highlights and images to remember.

It was a day a bit in the style of the successful comic strip Martine: Martine does apnea, Martine does sledding and of course to start : Martine at the sea!

A wake-up call facing the sea… and below!

The Olympic flame returned to France this Tuesday, June 18, carried by freediver Alice Modolo. The champion went to pick her up 17 meters underwater in the Mediterranean, in the harbor of Villefranche-sur-Mer.

“Torch kiss” in Grasse and everywhere!

All day long, personalities and anonymous people took turns giving “torch kisses”. Understand passing the light to the next torchbearer! In Grasse, it is notably the chef Jacques Chibois, an emblematic figure of Côte d’Azur cuisine, a Périgourdin of origin who trod the spoils:

Cannes and its stars

The flame is a regular on the red carpet! In fact, she had already climbed the steps during the Film Festival last May.

This time it was worn by two surprise guests: the American actress Halle Berry then the footballer Megan Rapinoe surrounded by a delegation of American athletes.

A whole team came up the Croisette: snowboarder and skater Shaun White and players of flag football (derived from American football) and lacrosse (a sport pitting two teams against each other and consisting of sending a rubber ball into the opposing goals using a stick), disciplines which will be on the program for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Meet at the Monaco Palace

Six torchbearers followed one another in the Principality. On the Place du Palais, Prince Albert took over the torch from Rudy Rinaldi, the Monegasque bobsledder. His wife and children were not far away:

A member of the International Olympic Committee, Albert II participated several times in the Winter Olympics in bobsleigh, and his grandfather John Kelly, father of Princess Grace, was a gold medalist in rowing at the Paris Olympics in 1924. A former swimming champion, Charlène took part in the Sydney Olympics under the colors of South Africa.

Antibes, its swimmers, its volunteers…

Postcard for the passage in the cities of the ramparts. A little reminiscent of images from the Tour de France, some would say. The seaside route in Antibes starting at Pointe du Bacon and ending at the Fort Carré stadium could allow for beautiful photos.

La Colmiane

And hop ! A torchlight zipline descent in La Colmiane/Valdeblore with world champion judoka Loïc Pietri! A passage of the Olympic flame at a speed of 120 km/h on the largest zip line in France with 2,663 meters of descent, spectacular, right?

Nice: emotion on the Promenade des Anglais

Four victims and representatives of family associations affected by the attack of July 14, 2016 came to the scene of the tragedy. for some, it was the first time in 8 years:

This is the first time I’m going to the Prom in 8 years. Aside from the ceremonies. I’m a little nervous and at the same time I hope that this will be the trigger to come back to it. There are many of us in this situation. Today is the opportunity to do so. In memory of all the victims. And to my daughter.

Philippe Murris lost his daughter Camille in the attack of July 14, 2016 on the Promenade.

Emotion also for the brother and father of Camille Muffat the swimmer died in 2015 during a helicopter crash in Argentina. In 2021, she was the one who paraded on the Promenade des Anglais with her medals from the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Joy at last, when Athlete Stéphane Diagana, specialist in the 400 meters hurdles and last Azurian torchbearer… of the day, embraced the cauldron:

I am very touched and very happy that many people came. Young and old. That’s the magic of sport, it brings everyone together; I am struck by this ability to bring people together. Already in Marseille when he arrived with Belem. It makes the Olympics real throughout the country and also overseas. Everywhere. Even though they don’t host events, everyone feels involved. I’m going to let emotion guide me.”
