AMSTERDAM – This is a new episode of violence in the Dutch capital. On Monday evening, November 11, riots broke out in Nieuw-West, a district in the west of Amsterdam. These clashes come a few days after Israeli supporters were attacked in the streets of the Dutch capital on the sidelines of the football match between AJAX Amsterdam and Maccabi Tel-Aviv.
As you can see in our video at the top of the articledozens of people set off fireworks and threw sticks on the public highway around square 40-45 located in Nieuw-West. Several cars were damaged by stone throwing and a tram was set on fire. The fire was quickly extinguished and the police intervened around 11 p.m., restoring calm to the square.
Dutch police said they did not know precisely who started the clashes and whether they were linked to violence against Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters last week. However, the atmosphere remains tense in Amsterdam since this event where five people were injured.
The city's mayor has banned all pro-Palestinian gatherings since November 7 and announced a strengthening of security measures. On Sunday, November 10, dozens of people were arrested on the sidelines of a demonstration in favor of Palestine, therefore defying the ban.
