Amnesty calls on FIFA to stop the 2034 World Cup award process – 2034 World Cup

STOP EVERYTHING!

FIFA is due to meet in congress in exactly one month, on December 11, to award the organization of the 2030 and 2034 World Cups. The suspense is non-existent: the joint application from Morocco, Portugal and Spain is the only one in the running for the 2030 edition, as well as that of Saudi Arabia for the next one. And there is nothing to rejoice in reading the latest Amnesty International report. The Saudi candidate logically takes his place.

Minimum wage, unions and freedom of expression

Saudi Arabia “should not be granted the privilege of hosting the tournament if it cannot demonstrate how it will respect its human rights obligations”insists the NGO, citing “the repression of the right to freedom of expression, the criminalization of sexual relations between people of the same sex, the widely documented forced evictions, the absence of a minimum wage or the banning of unions”. Elle thus calls on the international body to review its calendar : “The risks remaining in Saudi Arabia are so serious that FIFA must halt the process of awarding the 2034 tournament until major reforms are presented. »

Amnesty is not not convinced either by the human rights strategy of the federations involved in the organization of the 2030 World Cupevoking in particular “legislation criminalizing sexual relations between persons of the same sex and extramarital relations in Morocco”. For the NGO, “none of the applications sufficiently demonstrate that they meet the human rights criteria defined by FIFA” et “a more credible human rights strategy is needed for the 2030 tournament”.
