Football: wouldn’t that have deserved a red card?

Flamengo won the Brazilian Cup on Sunday, winning the return match in Belo Horizonte against Club Atlelico Mineiro 0-1. Already winner of the first leg at the Maracana stadium in Rio a week ago (3-1), the legendary Zico’s club thus won the fifth Cup in its history.

But the highlight of the night came in the first half, in the 38th minute. A mistake that has already spread around the world.

While Flamengo player Giorgian de Arrascaeta escaped on the right side to head towards the goal, CAM defender Lyanco dried him up in a brutal manner to say the least.

On almost every field in the world, and even if South America often stands out for its, let’s say, “very virile” game, the brave Lyanco would have taken a red. But on Sunday evening, the referee of the match, Raphael Claus, only gave the defender a yellow card.

Flamengo did not suffer from the mistake and Gonzalo Plata scored in the 82nd minute, sealing Atletico’s fate.

And in the 96th minute, Renzo Saravia, who replaced Lyanco in the 46th minute, was sent off.
