Throughout the tenth edition of the Vendée Globe, the most prestigious of nautical races, “Le Temps” will offer an immersive story by journalist Virginie Troussier, who will navigate between strategy, trajectory, weather conditions and confidences from participants. A series designed as both a sporting and philosophical exploration of the relationship between the sailor and the ocean

Our series

  • The start of the Vendée Globe was given on Sunday in Les Sables-d’Olonne.

  • Three of the forty competitors are Swiss: Alan Roura, Justine Mettraux and Oliver Heer.

  • The skippers seem to have started their adventure of several months well.

This Sunday, November 10, the sky is foggy. In Japan, the expression “to feed on mist” is that of great dreamers, it means “to live on love and fresh water”. A good omen for these 40 sailors. The day before, they were all eager to leave. Leave this land that was turning their heads, find the rhythm of the open sea. In the cockpits, the teams were fine-tuning the settings, completing the final details of a long preparatory ride. No apparent anxiety among the three Swiss skippers, they were even impressive with their calm. “I have never been so serene,” confided Alan Roura, “I don’t know if it’s maturity, but one thing is certain, I can’t wait to go sailing, to pull in, to push the machine and to bring to fruition what we have been working for for years.” “We know that we are going to leave in calm conditions, that helps us to be rather relaxed for this departure,” explained Justine Mettraux, when Oliver Heer declared, confidently: “It is time for my boat and me to set sail.” Final interviews, weather briefings, but above all, calm and simplicity on the program for the last day: a good shower, a good meal, sleep.

For months, the unpredictable
