Martin St-Louis decided to shake things up at Canadiens practice on Sunday, as the duo of Cole Caufield and Nick Suzuki was separated.
The day after a defeat against the Maple Leafs, Montreal held a training session in Toronto before going to Buffalo for a duel against the Sabers which will be played Monday from 12:30 p.m. on RDS.
Juraj Slafkovsky and Kirby Dach occupied the two winger positions alongside the captain, while Caufield played on the second unit with Jake Evans and Alex Newhook.
The third line remains intact with Josh Anderson, Brendan Gallagher and Christian Dvorak, while Emil Heineman, Lucas Condotta and Joel Armia formed the fourth.
After another defeat, the 6e straight from the CH, the team finds itself in last place in the NHL, tied with the San Jose Sharks. The Habs, however, have a differential of minus-23, the worst on the Bettman circuit.
After training, St-Louis appealed for calm, mentioning that the season was still young and that it was only November 10th.
“These are the facts of November 10. You can learn from the past. It’s about staying on task. We are disappointed with our position in the standings, but we have 67 other games this year. We can just learn from the past and continue moving forward,” put the head coach into perspective.
Same story for his captain Nick Suzuki, who is experiencing a slump with no points in four games in November, after a streak of 13 in 9 games to end the month of October.
“Our 5-on-5 game is better, we’re just unable to score. We want to win. It’s more pleasant to win. Morale is lower, but the guys are looking for a way to play better. We have to find a way to win games and that’s all that matters right now. If we continue to do the right things, we will be rewarded. »
The CH driver has no concerns about Suzuki, but he knows that he must do better to be the leader of his team.
“It’s harder as a leader when you don’t feel good about your game. It’s about continuing to control the things you can control. It’s your effort, your attitude. I’m not worried, the rest will come for Nick. »
According to St-Louis, it’s only a matter of time before we see the dynamic duo back together. “They have magical moments together, but sometimes, a little rest, a little break from being together, the spark comes back when you get them back together. I had this experience as a player. »
Gallagher continues to score
Despite the darker times for the team, one star continues to shine at the start of the campaign. On Saturday, Brendan Gallagher scored in a third straight game and brought his total to seven successes since the start of the season.
Although he is happy with his production, he would prefer to see his team line up victories rather than score in defeats.
“Our job is to find solutions. It can just be worse if you have a negative attitude. We discussed it and we hope for a good result in Buffalo on Monday, but results don’t come alone. You have to earn it and work for it,” explained the veteran Gallagher.
Cayden Primeau should be the starter in net against the Sabres.
