The presence of Wayne Greztky at Donald Trump’s rally at the luxurious Mar-a-Lago, the billionaire’s residence in Florida, during the American election night last Tuesday, shocked several Canadian citizens who idolized the Wonder.
Gretzky was among a select group of celebrities invited to the party. He was there with his wife Janet, his daughter Paulina, his son-in-law, professional golfer Dustin Johnson, and his son Trevor.
The world’s richest man, Elon Musk, and UFC boss Dana White were among the headliners also at the party.
This isn’t the first time Gretzky has let his political allegiances shine through, as he supported Stephen Harper’s Conservative Party in the 2015 Canadian election.
He was also photographed with Andrew Scheer when the latter was leader of the Conservatives.
Both on X and on Instagram, many Canadian Internet users deplored the complicity between Gretzky and Trump, considered a betrayal.
“You were an example of dignity for my family. All the memories I have of you are forever tainted,” reacted one of them.
The chronicler of Toronto Sun Brian Lilley, for his part, came to Gretzky’s defense, denouncing a “hypocrisy” of the elites of the left.
