Third day of training in Freiberg for the Red Devils, and one thing is already clear: the atmosphere is good. Yannick Carrasco, in particular, gave details of this very positive atmosphere.

Everyone still has in mind the end of the Martinez era: a fractured locker room, young Devils who had obviously had a hard time with the deleterious atmosphere created by the public and the media, a very surprising controversy between Kevin De Bruyne and Jan Vertonghen about the “age of the defense”, and even a supposed “mole” in the locker room. It wasn’t Knysna, but not far.

A year and a half later, what a difference. Paradoxically, Martinez has never had to deal with a case as tense as the “Courtois affair” in his 6 years of reign… but rarely, if not ever, has the atmosphere seemed so positive once the day came. arrived and the tournament began.

Two generations of Devils in harmony

This is what still emerged from Yannick Carrasco’s press conference this Thursday at the Jupiler Media Village in Freiberg. “The atmosphere and the cohesion of the group are great. We’ve been in the hotel together for a few days now, in Tubize then here. The guys play PlayStation, cards, no one stays locked in their room” , explains the Al-Shabab player.

“It’s a very important factor to go far in a big tournament. Of course, there is an age difference, but we are all adults,” smiles Carrasco. “It’s not like some are 14 and others 40. Veterans like Jan Vertonghen or even me can laugh with the younger guys in the group.”

A harmony which is reflected in particular on the Snapchat account ofAmadou Onana, clearly the great entertainer of the group and who created a hilarious relationship with Kevin De Bruyne. Already in Tubize, Onana was filming Lukaku and Doku playing PlayStation, Mangala and Carrasco competing in tennis, and his jokes on Snapchat are often mentioned by the media during press conferences.

De Bruyne even said recently that in his head, he was sometimes… 12 years old. “I’m also Amadou on SnapChat, I saw these videos (laughs). It’s important to stay young in your head. And when you’re a football player, you always stay a little young,” smiles Carrasco.

Some have their specialty: Jan Vertonghen, Charles De Ketelaere and Yannick Carrasco play cards a lot. Hans Vanaken, absent, was apparently the best in the business. “But I defend myself quite a bit,” laughs Yannick Carrasco.

From this evening (9 p.m.), Euro 2024 will be launched and the Devils will watch certain matches together, Carrasco also assured. “Not so much to analyze the opponents, that will be done if we face them. But to spend time together, for the atmosphere of the group,” he assures. In training too, we see big smiles, and Domenico Tedesco often comes to chat openly with the press. Clearly, Qatar 2022 is in the past…
