The Rouge et Noir defense closed the door late in the game on Thursday at TD Place, and the Ottawa club defeated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 23-19 in its opening match.

A thunderstorm forced the game to be interrupted with 2:09 left in the fourth quarter. After a delay of about an hour, both teams returned to the field.

The Blue Bombers approached the Rouge et Noir seven-yard line during the last minute of regulation time, but Damon Webb brilliantly knocked down a pass from Zach Collaros in the end zone. Lorenzo Mauldin IV then had a sack against Collaros on the next play, causing a turnover after an unconverted third down.

The Rouge et Noir conceded a safety touchdown with 14 seconds left on the clock and the last bomb attempted by Collaros found no takers.

A two-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter allowed the Rouge et Noir (1-0) to take the lead before the storm arrived.

With 7:09 left and the Rouge et Noir trailing 17-16, Dru Brown, making his debut with the Ottawa club, connected with Justin Hardy for a 42-yard gain to the Blue’s five-line Bombers.

After a three-yard run, and in heavy rain, Brown found Hardy alone in the back of the end zone. The Rouge et Noir missed its two-point conversion attempt, but a Richie Leone single on a punt gave it a 23-17 lead.

Brown completed 20 of his 33 passes for 238 yards and a major.

Collaros was 15-for-31 for 285 yards. He was the victim of two interceptions.
