For weeks, the question of the cost of living has been agitating overseas territories. The editorial team is offering you a special program to take stock of the situation, review the root causes which explain the price differences and consider possible solutions.
For two months, Martinique has been shaken by demonstrations against the high cost of living. The movement is spreading to other overseas territories, marked by recurring social crises. How can we explain the price differences between France and overseas? What solutions can be found to restore purchasing power to overseas residents? The Overseas La 1ère editorial team is offering a special evening this Thursday, November 7, to decipher the problem of the high cost of living.
Hosted by Thierry Belmont, the program “Overseas: life is more expensive?” is a debate that revolves around reports and testimonies from anonymous people or celebrities.
Firstly, Thierry Belmont and his guests return to reasons for anger and on the mobilizations of recent weeks. Distributor margins, dock dues, dependence on the French economy… They then explore the factors that explain price differenceswhile food products cost almost 40% more in the DROMs than elsewhere in France. Finally, they address the impact of colonial history on local economic systems and try to sketch solutions.
