Algeria Football – Months after Algeria’s complaint against Morocco concerning the RS Berkane jersey, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) makes a decision.
The conflict over the jersey of the Renaissance Sportive de Berkane (RS Berkane) against the USMA, displaying a map of Morocco including Western Sahara, triggered a strong reaction in Algeria. The decision of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to authorize this jersey for matches in the group stage of the CAF Cup was seen as a political gesture favorable to Morocco, despite prior warnings from the Algerian Football Federation (FAF). Indeed, as early as August, the FAF had warned CAF, recalling a similar incident during the previous season, but without obtaining a response.
This tense situation will take a decisive turn on November 12, the date on which the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne plans to hear both parties. This hearing represents an opportunity for Algeria to defend its arguments and hope for a favorable outcome. The FAF considers this appeal to the CAS as a chance to restore fairness and remind international sporting bodies of neutrality in competitions.
Attention now turns to this decisive hearing, the outcome of which could influence relations between the two countries and the regulation of political symbols in African football. A victory at the CAS would mark a turning point for Algeria in this dispute which mixes sport and politics.
