Thomas Meunier will not travel with the Red Devils on Wednesday to the base camp established in Ludwigsburg for Euro 2024 football. After suffering “a muscle injury” during the preparation match against Luxembourg on Saturday, the full-back will have to undergo new examinations in the coming days to assess his condition. The Belgian football federation made the announcement on X on Sunday.

“Thomas Meunier will temporarily not be able to travel to Germany on Wednesday due to a muscle injury. Additional examinations will be carried out in the coming days,” the press release described. Meunier was injured in the first quarter of an hour of the match against Luxembourg. The full-back was holding the inside of his right thigh when the medical staff intervened.

A prolonged absence could pose serious problems for Domenico Tedesco in view of the Euro, which will begin on June 17 for Belgium against Slovakia. Deprived of his first choice at left back, Arthur Theate, Tedesco had aligned Thomas Meunier in this position for the match against Luxembourg, while the Trabzonspor player is naturally used to playing on the right.

Domenico Tedesco can still make changes to his list of 25 players, in the event of injury, until the eve of Belgium’s first match at the Euro. Olivier Deman (Werder Bremen/All) could in particular be an option to fill the void on the left side of the defense.

Affected by several injuries during his career, Meunier nevertheless had half a full season in Turkey, where he arrived last January. “It’s been ten years since I played 28 matches in a row,” the Red Devil joked at a press conference on Friday.
