“Please be patient with Caufield’s defense”

The Canadian is doing badly this year.

Is everything going wrong? No. But there are still many elements that have not been going well for several weeks, which makes the customer experience… a bit unpleasant.

But there is one player who does his job: Cole Caufield. With 10 goals in 12 games, he is doing what is expected of him.

And on this subject, Alain Crête, on the airwaves of BPM Sports, was quite clear this morning: let’s let Caufield do what he does best (score) without pushing him too hard with his defensive game.

He said to be patient with #13’s defense.

His point? Let everyone mind their own business. He wants to see other guys play defense so he can let the American small forward do what he does best in life: score at the same rate he did before his injury.

He gives the example of Mike Bossy. We didn’t have to complain about his defensive play since he scored.

Alain Crête’s point is important because if we read between the lines, we understand that he does not want to see the Canadian distort Cole Caufield, whose offensive game is his great strength.

By playing in such an environment, it’s a risk.

Let’s connect with another player: Lane Hutson. On Saturday, as mentioned by Arpon Basu (The Athletic), the offensive defenseman played his most conservative game since arriving in the NHL.

It’s both good… but also (if not especially) bad.

A conservative Lane Hutson is a waste of Lane Hutson. –Arpon Basu

There are several differences between the two (one of the two brands plusone of the two is an attacker and one of the two has more experience), but it is notably through the offensive play of #48 that CH will relaunch.

Yes, he must play defensively… but he must not distort himself. Martin St-Louis should not place Hutson in a position that will force a public outcry over the use of the American defender.

– I like it.

– Hope 2025: Ivan Ryabkin will not come to North America this year, after all. [RG]
