The arrival of young prodigy Matvei Michkov in North America was most anticipated by hockey fans and the Russian has not disappointed so far, with nine points in his first nine games with the Philadelphia Flyers.
Even though he has to adapt to a new continent, new rink dimensions and a different style of play, Michkov doesn’t seem too out of place so far and he is able to translate his undeniable talent into the NHL.
Michkov was more discreet on Sunday night against the Montreal Canadiens – who had the chance to call his name during the 2023 draft – but captain Sean Couturier still had complimentary remarks about the young Flyers player.
“I think he’s still adjusting, but he’s adjusting well. He is a young player with exceptional talent, he is the future of our team. When he has time and space, he will make plays,” Couturier told a few members of the Montreal media in Philadelphia, including RDS journalist Luc Gélinas.
“He’s still learning. He makes a big difference on our numerical advantage and at five against five, he still adapts because he has less space than in Russia. He is able to attract two or three players to him and make small plays to create space for his teammates. »
Before his draft and even after his selection, there were many rumors of behavioral and attitude problems in Michkov, problems that would have cooled some teams.
Couturier wanted to share his observations on this subject to rectify the situation.
“He has character. He wants to make a difference, he wants to be the best, he wants to improve. He’s a hard worker, I think there were several rumors in the media about his attitude. So far, we have nothing to complain about. I think he will continue to adapt and improve. »
And if there’s one player on the Flyers who can attest to Michkov’s attitude, it’s Couturier. The Canadian native of Phoenix was paired with Travis Konecny and Michkov at the start of the season.
While he probably plays a big brother role alongside Michkov, Couturier also believes he’s slowly developing chemistry with his linemates on the ice. And a sign that things are progressing, they had an electrifying match as recently as Saturday.
While Couturier had five points, just like Konecny, the young Michkov collected two points in a second straight game.
“It’s only part of it… the start of the season was a little more difficult despite that, but it’s good for confidence. I want to build on that. With Konecny and Michkov, we are building great chemistry and I hope it will continue to improve. »
