Rugby 7s – Madrid Tournament. “Final 8”, possible victory for the French teams… The format of the competition

The world rugby sevens circuit ends this weekend with the Madrid tournament (May 31 – June 2), last stage of the HSBC SVNS 2024. Grand final with eight teams, possible final victory for the French teams, here is the explanation of the format of the Madrid tournament.

The Madrid tournament begins this Friday, May 31 at the Metropolitano Stadium. This is the final bouquet of this international rugby sevens season. The protagonists of this HSBC SVNS 2024 meet one last time just two months before the long-awaited Paris 2024 Olympic Games. A grand final which will determine the winners of this exercise 2024 and which should also give several indications on the state of form of each person.

The 8 best teams meet

This is a new format that will take place. While the winner of the circuit is usually chosen by ranking at the end of the last stage, the female and male winners will therefore be chosen at the end of a final phase, where the cards will be reshuffled. These are the eight best teams (out of twelve) from the women’s and men’s tournaments, ranked at the end of the Singapore tournament, who will compete in a final phase mode this weekend in Madrid.

The two French teams can therefore claim final victory. David Courteix’s Bleues ranked 3rd at the end of the last stage and would be well inspired to win their first gold medal. Jérôme Daret’s men, winners in Los Angeles, finished in 5th place at the end of the Singapore tournament. They will face stiff competition. A final rehearsal before the Olympics.

No quarter-finals

With only eight teams, there will only be two groups (A and B), unlike the usual three. Each team will play three group matches. Australia, Great Britain and Argentina for the Blues, Fiji, Ireland and Australia for the women.

The two best teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals then, in case of victory, the final which will take place on Sunday at 8:26 p.m. Classification matches will define the places for the teams eliminated in the groups.

HSBC SVNS accession matches

Alongside the eight-team grand final, this Madrid tournament will also determine the teams that will join the world circuit for next year (HSBC SVNS 2025). The four lowest ranked women’s and men’s teams, from places 9 to 12, will face the top four teams in the World Rugby HSBC SVNS Challenger 2024, the second division of world rugby sevens.
