Around thirty Hautes-Alpes gendarmes will be deployed this summer in the host cities of the Olympic Games. The prefecture wants to be confident in its ability to ensure security in the department, while law enforcement holidays are postponed.

The summer promises to be busy. Between daily missions such as road safety, the fight against delinquency, securing tourist areas, but also hosting four stages of the Tour de France, the law enforcement program is full.

Added to all this, the need to send gendarmes from Hautes-Alpes to ensure the security of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the host cities. Around thirty so far.

Reinforced workforce

What is there to worry about the State’s capacity to be present on all fronts in the Hautes-Alpes? Maxime Lecompte, sub-prefect, chief of staff of the Hautes Alpes prefect, wants to be reassuring. “The security forces will be there this summer for the Haut-Alpins given the need to occupy the territory,” assures the latter.

“A presence of the police which is finally reinforced so that we can deal with our usual missions”, even suggests the sub-prefect to BFM DICI.

In total, more than 14,000 law enforcement officers will be deployed in all departments of the country.

No vacation this summer for law enforcement

An exceptional presence made possible by the leave restrictions for police officers and gendarmes during the summer period in order to ensure general mobilization of staff. Thanks to this measure, the national police will be able to count on 60% to 100% of its workforce.

Similar figures for the military. The colonel of the Hautes-Alpes gendarmerie, Jérôme Grange, says he is satisfied. On the firefighters side too, additional reinforcements have been anticipated. The objective is to deal with unforeseen events such as forest fires. In total, the department will be able to call on 1,300 men and women this summer, the majority of whom will be volunteers.

A recruitment campaign is currently underway on the SDIS 05 site to continue to grow the ranks.
