Intra-squad matches are all well and good, but nothing is better than real opposition.

As the second week of their training camp draws to a close, the Montreal Alouettes face the Toronto Argonauts in their first preseason game, this evening at Percival-Molson Stadium.

Fans of the reigning Gray Cup champions had the opportunity to see all the healthy starting players in action.

At quarterback, No. 1 Cody Fajardo started the game. It didn’t take long for him to make his presence felt. He joined Kaion Julien-Grant on 48 yards to score a touchdown in the Birds’ first offensive sequence.

The veteran quarterback gave way to Caleb Evans during the Alouettes’ third sequence. He finished his night’s work by completing seven of eight passes for 107 yards and a touchdown. The Alouettes took advantage of these sequences to take a 13-7 lead after one quarter.

Third quarter used by head coach Jason Maas in the first half, Davis Alexander earned points with his coach. He completed all four passes during his sequence on the field and finished the job on his own by scoring the touchdown on the ground.

Pre-match notes

This first rehearsal for the regular season will also be an opportunity for the leaders of the Montreal club to see if veteran Walter Fletcher has what it takes to replace William Stanback as No. 1 ball carrier. Jeshrun Antwi, Sean Thomas Erlington, Mike Weber Jr. and Stevie Scott III are his competitors.

On the receiving end, Tyson Philpot and Kaion Julien-Grant will see action, as will rookie Charleston Rambo who has had a good camp so far.
The team’s first choice in the last draft, Quebec linebacker Geoffrey Cantin-Arku, will have the opportunity to perform in front of his audience for the first time after years at the University of Memphis and Syracuse.

Quebecers Vincent Delisle and Maxym Lavallée will also want to stand out at the marauder position and on special teams.

The Birds will play another preparatory game next Friday against the Rouge et Noir in Ottawa, before beginning their campaign at the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on June 6.
