On the occasion of the African Men’s and Women’s Pétanque Championships, which will take place from June 6 to 9 in Marrakech, the Royal Moroccan Pétanque Federation (FRMP) held, Wednesday in Rabat, a press conference, intended to throw the light on these African games.
These championships will be another opportunity to confirm Morocco’s image as a host country for major sporting events, said FRMP officials.

The organization of these championships in Morocco is part of the choice of opening up to Africa, advocated by HM King Mohammed VI and confirms the reputation of the Kingdom in terms of organizing major events on the continental and international levels, these officials said at the time.

They, at the same time, underlined that the choice of Marrakech to host these championships stems from the desire to contribute to the growth of sports tourism in Morocco.

On this occasion, the president of the FRMP, Khalid El Mansouri, stressed that so far, 18 countries have confirmed their presence in the men’s and seven in the women’s, noting that this is the first edition where men and ladies will compete at the same time, knowing that the African men’s championship has been organized since 2007, while the first women’s championship was held in 2019.

This championship, organized in Morocco for the second time, after the 2013 edition in Casablanca, will be an opportunity to demonstrate the organizational capacities of the Kingdom, in anticipation of its candidacy for the organization of the world championship, indicated Mr. El Mansouri.

“We hope to win this title for the third time for men and the first for women,” said the official, recalling that since 2007, Morocco has won 12 medals on the African level, 5 in gold, 3 in silver and 4 bronze.

For his part, the secretary general of the African Ball Sports Confederation (CASB), the Moroccan Sadik Guermah assured that Morocco’s candidacy for the organization of this event was welcome within the continental body, thanks to the good reputation of the Kingdom in the organizational field.

Mr. Guermah, newly appointed to this position within the African body, insisted on the involvement of all stakeholders to ensure the success of this sporting event, affirming that the organization of these championships in Morocco had an impact favorable among the participating teams.

On another aspect, the national technical director of the FRMP, Noureddine Kotby indicated that Morocco will be represented at these championships by teams A and B, the composition of which has not yet been definitively fixed.

“After several meetings and tournaments, we arrived at a sketch of the two teams, the composition of which will be final before the African championship,” he explained.

Regarding the objectives set for this competition, he said that “we aspire to win gold”.

Morocco won the 8th edition of the African Men’s Championship at the beginning of November 2021 in Ouagadougou. Supervised by coach Abdellatif Laouija, the Moroccan selection included Khaled Bennar, Omar Al-Saghir, Youssef Al-Saghir and Hamza Kharbouch.
