Roland-Garros 2024: discover the crazy bonuses planned for players

For all professional tennis players, the four Grand Slam tournaments represent the gooses that lay the golden eggs. Obviously participating in it is important in a sporting sense in a career but it is also true for finances. The stars of the circuit will be able to increase their fortune a little more in the event of a good run. While those fighting to enter or stay in the top 150 will receive the money that will allow them to make up a good part of their annual budget by simply entering the main draw. This year, the organizers of Roland-Garros have once again increased (by 7.82% compared to 2023) their overall allocation to reach an amount of 53.478 million euros.

For Djokovic, the favorite is Nadal, if he plays…

If the winners of the singles will receive 100,000 euros more than last season (2.4 million euros instead of 2.3), it is above all, proportionally, at the level of the qualifications and the first round that the changes will be important. A first qualifying round will bring in 20,000 euros (16,000 in 2023), a second 28,000 (22,000 in 2023) and a third 41,000 (34,000 in 2023). An entry into the main draw, like that of David Goffin for example, will guarantee a check for 73,000 euros (69,000 in 2023). The allocation for the main draw in singles shows an increase of 7% compared to 2023. That of the qualifications is 24.65%.

If more and more players, like our compatriots Sander Gillé and Joran Vliegen for example, can make a living from tennis by only having a career in doubles, this is especially possible thanks to the bonuses received in Grand Slams. The amounts are not as important as in singles but a nice course in Paris allows you not to worry too much about the budget for the year. Last year, the Sandoran pair received 295,000 euros (Editor’s note: to be split in two) for their final at Porte d’Auteuil. An amount which will be identical this year in the event of similar performance. The mixed tournament is much less paid (5,000 euros in the first round, 122,000 in case of success) but participating in it still allows you to put a little butter in your spinach. This is why many doubles players try mixed if their ranking allows it and if they find a partner.

Finally, if our compatriot Joachim Gérard is a professional athlete in his own right, it is also and above all thanks to the money he will earn in the Majors where the remuneration is much higher than in the other tournaments of the season. Here too, the organizers of the French Open have slightly increased the prize money with bonuses which now range from 8,500 euros for a round of 16 to 62,000 for the winner. In 2023, the range started at 8000 and ended at 60000.

You should also know that all athletes present at Roland-Garros receive a “Per Diem” during their journey which is a fixed daily allowance which allows them to pay for hotel nights and/or food on the site.
