Setting off under the sun from Manerba del Garda, on the shores of Lake Garda, the runners faced the most difficult stage of this edition this Sunday, with 222 km and 5,400 m of altitude difference.

The UAE Emirates team of Tadej Pogacar and the Ineos-Grenadiers of Geraint Thomas controlled the gaps with the breakaway all day long. The men at the front were never able to get more than a six minute lead.

The Pink Jersey Tadej Pogacar benefited from the good work of Rafal Majka and Felix Grossschartner, here behind the Ineos runners, before flying into the Foscagno pass.

Once he left, the Slovenian followed up all the escaped riders one by one until Nairo Quintana, who surely thought he was heading towards a stage victory ten years after winning the Giro.

Many Slovenian supporters accompanied their national hero on this climb located in Lombardy, approximately 500 km from their country.

Present in the breakaway, Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-QuickStep) could not resist the return of the favorites. He finished this difficult stage in 48th place.

Romain Bardet (dsm-firmenich) carried out the good operation of the day. After a timeout in the group of favorites following Tadej Pogacar’s attack, the Auvergne took off in turn and recovered precious seconds which allowed him to climb to 7th place overall. The next mountain stages could allow him to move up the rankings again.

Ultra-offensive since the start of the Giro, Tadej Pogacar is already on his fourth stage victory. He can advance calmly in the third week, with almost 7 minutes ahead of Geraint Thomas overall.

After his spectacular performance, time to rest for Tadej Pogacar. The peloton will only leave on Tuesday, from Livigno, towards Santa Cristina Valgardena, without passing through the Stelvio, initially on the program but avoided because of the snow.
