Rugby – National: against Nice in the final, Narbonne paid for its very long season

In this National final in Chambéry, lost 39-30 against Nice, the Racing Club Narbonnais lacked mental and physical freshness. The result of a grueling season, in every way.

Harassing, grueling, the season of the Racing Club Narbonnais, which has not yet finished, and which will have to play an access match against the team which finished 15th in Pro D2, Montauban.

It will then be Sunday June 2. The “orange and black” will have had a season of almost a year. They resumed training on Monday June 19 for a first match played on August 26. And no one could have imagined that the pace would become hellish during this last month of competition. The one of all dreams, but also of all dangers. This month when spring makes the first ambitions bloom.

For the RCN, it was also during this month that it played two monstrous derbies against Carcassonne. The first in Narbonne where Racing won at the end of an unbearable suspense, 14-10, and a second in Carcassonne, where Julien Seron’s players, there too, expended crazy energy despite the defeat, 27- 20. This match was not planned, necessarily, at that time. We will add a trip to Suresnes, at the other end of France, where Narbonne went to seek direct qualification for the semi-final in the last minutes of another unbreathable meeting (36-23). Did you say stressful? Then there is this semi-final that Racing played against Carcassonne, which it will therefore have met three times this season, and which will have ended after extra time in a suspense which reached its climax (23-20). Narbonne left feathers there, of course, when in this exercise, Nice will have played two matches less, since it did not play the return match against Blagnac due to its withdrawal, winning its semi-final against Suresnes, with more ease and serenity, 35-13. During their season, the Niçois also won with more relaxation, scoring an average of 30 points at home.

The impression that the season ended on Saturday on the Chambéry lawn

For Racing, and at this level of the competition, these matches which never end, in an atmosphere worthy of finals before their time, cost energy. Racing undoubtedly paid for this series of terrible matches against Nice where, from the hour mark onwards, it suddenly, and collectively, lacked lucidity, made errors, approximations, made mistakes. His bench was not as decisive as that of Nice, fresher, livelier, stronger… And Narbonne lowered the notch of its aggressiveness. Here too, Racing lacked resources, deprived of its third row Thibault Clauzade (suspended) and its pillar Geoffrey Moïse (injured). This sentence, released by Julien Seron at the end of the match, holds its full meaning: “We had to make changes, our pillars could no longer take it.”

Narbonne will therefore have to put this strange feeling aside, that of having the impression that the season ended on Saturday on the pitch in Chambéry, and return to battle against a Pro D2 club, Montauban, on Sunday June 2 ( 3 p.m. at the Sports Park). He will be able to count on his solid gold supporters to give him wings. But this season will leave its mark.
