English striker Phil Foden, 23, was named best player of the 2023-2024 season in the Premier League, an award which returns for the fifth year in a row to Manchester City, the dominant club in England.

The winger or attacking midfielder has scored 17 goals and delivered 8 assists, a personal best, in 34 appearances this season, contributing to the success of his training club, leader before the final day of the championship played on Sunday.

The England international took the spotlight during the 2023-2024 season, notably when Kevin De Bruyne, Manchester City’s playing master, was stuck in the infirmary. He is the second most used outfield player (in number of minutes played) by Pep Guardiola.

Foden succeeds his teammates De Bruyne (winner in 2019/2020 and 2021/2022) Ruben Dias (2020/2021) and Erling Haaland, his predecessor.

The Norwegian striker was one of eight players nominated for the prestigious award this year, along with Alexander Isak (Newcastle), Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice (Arsenal), Cole Palmer (Chelsea), Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool) and Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa).

The vote was carried out by a panel of experts, including former players and journalists, and by supporters.

Foden achieves a double after also being named player of the year 2024 by the Football Writers’ Association (FWA), the association of English sports journalists.

“I am extremely proud to have won this award,” reacted the striker in a press release published by his club. “The Premier League is renowned for being the greatest championship in the world, it’s a pleasure to have been nominated alongside so many other great players who have all had exceptional seasons with their clubs.”

A double at Brighton in April allowed him to pass the 50 career goal mark with Manchester City in the Premier League.

In the event of a coronation, on Sunday after the last match against West Ham, Foden would become the youngest player in history to have won six titles in the English championship.
